untitled is a mixed media story bringing attention to global warming and climate change, specifically in NYC. Futuristic movies taking place in large cities tend to place focus on the idea of nature starting to reclaim the landscape, but that idea is much closer to present than people realize. I decided to center my project on this topic, with a narrow focus on New York, where I'm from. Walking around the city in present day, it's possible to already start to see places where nature is pushing itself onto the city and reclaiming its place.
I decided to create a city block from a birds-eye view that has started to be taken over by plants and nature. Weaving the pieces together with vines and flowers, the pieces are all connected, imitating the way nature is interconnected. Chia seeds climb up some of the buildings, hinting that the city will continue to be taken over and claimed by nature as life continues.
Hand-built with throwing clay and painted with watercolors, the buildings feel both very constructed and worn down. The idea that water could make the plants grow or wash the buildings' paints away feels both precarious and alluring. untitled has many ways it can grow (both literally and figuratively) and changes from day to day as the plants die and also sprout.
More coming soon!
